I'd guess the Northern Alliance is being supported only to overthrow the Taliban and due to the risk of igniting further fundamentalist support, we will stay out of figuring out who leads from there.

Presumably, Iran will be supporting a Pushtun drive from the South and the NA from the North. Whatever remains of the Taliban and its supporters will struggle to control narrow enclaves along the Pakistan border.

Possibly, Afghanistan will be divided into two or three regions, not unlike Yugoslavia. Most subsequent humanitarian aid from us will go to those who help and seem most able to mount a successful government.

A more remote possibility would see a figurehead Prez (like the ex-King) with territorial governors holding the real power over the regions they lead.
