John Hull was kind enough to point me to a spreadsheet showing Intel's investment gains for the past 2.5 years. The gross profits of such were over $4B during those years. I applied a 30% tax rate to the figure and it was still over $3B net. That's almost enough to have funded their entire share repo program for Y2K at an average price of $54.

Their gross profit from investment gains in Y2K was over $3B, including over $2B in 2Q2000 alone. Their gross profit from investment gains in 2001 has totalled $3M so far, a 99.8% decrease YoY. I still wonder about the magnitude of their unrealized investment losses in this market environment.
