I think the best way to look at AMD's rating scheme is that the model name is an extremely conservative estimate of equivalent P4 performance, even on Elmer's so-called "New Code." IOW, an Athlon XP 1.8+ will outperform a Pentium 4 1.8 on 90% of benchmarks, not just 50%. That includes most of the SPEC benchmarks -- like the six SPECviewperf benchmarks.

A Tbird 1.4 beats the P4 1.5 by a factor of more than 2.5 in AWADVS (advanced visualizer). Compare P4 at anandtech.com to TBird 1.4 at www6.tomshardware.com

And P4 no longer has an advantage on PROCDRS.

Of course, it's strange how no one has run SPECviewperf on the P4 since ~ February, and Intel has removed all SPECviewperf benchmarks from it's website.

how embarrassing!
