Keep religion in perspective, McCain says

God may bless America, but he shouldn't be running the show.
So says Sen. John McCain, who warned students in Sierra Vista Thursday against mixing piety with politics as the United States prepares a response to the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
"I obviously feel that we are, as we say, 'one nation under God,' " McCain told students at Buena High School.
"But I would also say that you've got to be careful with how much you put religion into government," the Arizona Republican said. "Because there's a place for religion and a place for government. So I would be very careful in how much I invoke God in this effort we are making."
Christian Adams, a 17-year-old junior who brought up the topic, told McCain he disagreed with that approach. He said he's pleased by President Bush's frequent references to God in the wake of the attacks.
"I believe in Bush in a lot of ways because I feel that we should rely on God for everything because he created us," Adams said, prompting a round of applause from the crowd.
McCain visited Buena after meeting with officials at Fort Huachuca. He spoke later in Green Valley before returning to Phoenix. <snip> |
