President George W. Bush said the US was in "hot pursuit" of those responsible for this month's terror attacks as officials admitted US and British forces were already on the ground in Afghanistan.

Defence experts said on Friday special forces would have entered Afghanistan either on foot or in drops from specially-quietened US helicopters. Among US forces, troops involved are likely to include Delta Force, the US Army's Green Berets and Rangers, or Navy Seals.

The British soldiers thought to be in Afghanistan are most likely to come from the Special Air Service Regiment which, with the Delta Force, conducted covert missions behind enemy lines during the Gulf war.

Their missions would include reconnaissance of possible terrorist hide-outs and Taliban military sites, as well as to act as "pathfinders", checking potential landing sites and other details for troops when full-scale military action begins.
