>> New Zealand to Get a Second GSM network

UK Cellular News
September 27, 2001

New Zealand's Hautaki Charitable Trust has signed an agreement with Econet Wireless International to develop a third cellular network in New Zealand. The Hautaki Charitable Trust is a Maori trust that was allowed to purchase a block of 3G spectrum in auction earlier this year at a 5% discount to the other bidders. Econet Wireless already owns a chunk of GSM spectrum after it purchased Northelia earlier this year. The agreement between Hautaki and Econet will allow Econet to build a network and lease its 3G spectrum. The Hautaki Trust will retain a right to purchase 30% of the joint venture at a later date. The company plans to build a GSM network and will use recent legislation to force Vodafone to allow it to roam onto the Vodafone GSM network while it builds out its infrastructure. <<
