Since every 100 units increase in the model number comes on only a 66MHz clock increase, the current Palomino units formula may be as simple as ((clock * 3 / 2) - 500). The 500 is to make sure the benches for the majority come out significantly ahead. Remove the 500, and you make it even with P4 (a little more than 50% are ahead and a little less than 50% are behind) and thus are comparable. Given the above, a 1.533GHz Palomino has a score of 2300 - 500 or 1800+ (thus, the plus means for 1 to 1 comparability you add 500MHz). Thus to those of us who know the true performance in everyday applications, an Athlon 1800+ is as fast as a 2.3GHz P4.

Unless P4 scales in a hurry to 2.3GHz, they will be leapfrogged within a few weeks. Last I heard, P4 will not get there before Q1/02. By then, either Palomino will be at 2200+ (2.7GHz P4) or Throughbred at 2GHz and some new formula with a larger multiplier (>1.5).
