HONOLULU -- Hawaii's largest airline said Friday that it would cut 12 percent of its work force because of a drop in travel after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
Hawaiian Airlines will lay off 430 employees, about 12 percent of its staff of 3,524, effective Sept. 30, the company said.
Hawaiian, the nation's 12th largest carrier, said last week it will cut 35 of its 158 daily interisland flights and 22 of its 120 weekly trans-Pacific flights effective Monday.
"Furloughing employees is the last thing we want to do, but we've exhausted all other options," said Paul J. Casey, Hawaiian's vice chairman and chief executive officer.
Aloha Airlines said last week it would cut about 25 percent of its interisland flights and lay off 250 workers, about 8 percent of its 3,000 employees. |
