But of course you only "respect" these benchmarks when they are run at low resolutions.

Which is not how people use them.

The sad fact is that if benchmarks were done to reflect actual user experience they incresingly show that CPU's much faster than 600Mhz are pretty inconsequential.

This whole benchmark argument is pretty irrelevant.

The customers are increasingly figuring out CPU's at any speed are fast enough.

This is what has let to the price implosion between fastest CPU and lowest grades.

If Intel could deliver a 3Ghz PIV I doubt if consumers would pay any more than the 2Ghz PIV.
