re:"I think one of the big chores for Intel is to find meaningful ways to sell their products, to make someone feel the need to upgrade their already "fast enough" 600MHz machines."
I dont think Intel can do it.
Bill gates was mumbling about need for low cost broadband.
Without it the home PC market gets limited.
Its like expecting folks to buy faster car but there are only one lane roads.
The whole industry is in CLEAR and PRESENT DANGER of stagnating without essentially free broadband access.
Although i cant see chambers, gates, barratt going cap in hand to the government for a few years.
As far as: "there are are always some people interested in the top speed grade, which is why there is always a fight to be #1, even from a PR perspective. Right now, the market for 2GHz machines is probably <1%, but eventually that will be the mainstream offering, and it will eventually take the majority market share. Similarly, a 3GHz Pentium 4 will have a <1% market for the performance it offers, but some people will be willing to pay the premium. Eventually, though, it will become mainstream. Such is the way of CPUs, as it always has been, despite claims from others to the contrary."
Yes but lets assume that 3Ghz PIV was available for $1000.
I dont see a large population buying it.
And if its priced at $400 this will depress the price for 2Ghz machines down.
The problem is that there is no longer a NEED.
Now the buyer is buying based on ego, emotion much like for any consumer item.
