Kash, Re: re:"I think one of the big chores for Intel is to find meaningful ways to sell their products, to make someone feel the need to upgrade their already "fast enough" 600MHz machines."

I dont think Intel can do it.

You're partially correct. Intel cannot do it by themselves. When the concept of a GUI operating system came along, Intel wasn't the one to offer it, but they took advantage of the PC user's need for more performance, and marketed their processors accordingly.

When the Internet became larger, and more users required Windows 9x capable computers to connect for email and web access, it wasn't Intel that invented the content, but they found a way to make their processors available, and marketed them to enhance the consumer's connection to the Internet.

Right now, we don't know what will become the next "killer app", but it would be foolish to assume it will never exist. You would be wasting an awesome opportunity if the next wave of demand picks up, and you don't have the foresight to invest in a technology that still has much of a future. I still think that microprocessing can be expanded to include new forms of productivity and content, and that there still exist many markets for Intel to continue growth in. But all that's just MHO.
