| I guess what I would like to know is the justification and the logical explanations to each of the teaching items discussed in the following: members.aol.com

In particular I am most interested to know what is the logic behind a holly book advocating, promoting or even discussing wife beating/punishment by her husband - especially if so many people preach that Islam is about love and peace.

As a response to my question as why Koran discusses wife beating, I received from the following post from a well respected, highly educated, and well mannered - and apparently a Muslim - individual living here in the U.S by the name of Amein M. Alsuezi:

The explanation given is that, the wife beating that is being advised to Muslim men in Koran is not really that harsh of a beating or punishment -- it is meant to be a slap on the and or someting like that!

I guess the point that is missed by this well respected and educated individual is the whole notion of a holly book advocating, promoting or even discussing the idea of a teaching that a man can beat his wife if she does not obey him to his satsifaction!

So many people these days from Islamic countries claim that the psychopaths like the Taliban or Osaman Bin Laden, or Khomeini groupies are not real Muslims and they do not represent Islam at all. And I wonder...

If one reads Koran word-by-word one can easily conclude that these psychopaths do indeed represent Islam as presented in Koran for which they are simply following its teachings word-by-word and to the last letter. Therefore is it possible that the vast majority of Muslims are trying very hard to distance themselves from the Koran without admitting that they are doing so? Do Muslims want to modernize, and/or sanitize their religion to reflect the 21st century life we live?

Or perhaps I am missing something and have a wrong interpretation of matters for which I would sincerely appreciate if I can be be educated on the subject via logical explanations... And this is particularly important for which I know if I had raised these issues in an Islamic country (e.g. Saudi Arabia, Iran, Algeria, iraq, Egypt, Jordon, Sudan, etc. etc. etc.) I would have been imprisoned on my way to death for daring to have questions about the religion. With the hope that no one has placed a contract on my head already, I sincerely hope logical explanations can be provided to my innocent questions. I do not mean to insault anyone or any idealogy. I am simply a student of life with total open mind to easily change based on logic and the morality that I find in that logic.
