Disappearing RAM ..

Wondered if any of you folks have run into this ..

I have a HP-5390n notebook PC with 933 mhz Pentium III
processor and 256 MB RAM and Windows ME operating
system which I've been told is less than stable .. ie
the OS tends to 'freeze' ..

Here's what I've noticed ..

Go to ..

START-PROGRAMS-ACCESSORIES-SYSTEM TOOLS-SYSTEM INFORMATION

Once in SYSTEM INFORMATION I have

total physical memory = 255.45 MB
available physical memory = 121.57 MB

On occaision I've observed that 'available physical
memory' to be less than 30 MB ..

I'm guessing that the Windows ME will 'freeze' if/when
'availble physical memory' falls to 0 .. causing
one to re-boot the system ..

Any thoughts on what is happening here ???

This PC is factory direct original set-up ..

I've got two of them LANed through a Linksys router
sharing a cable-modem connection ..

I get the "RAM drop-off" on both machines ..

The only idea I have is to go to the "device drivers"
file and turn everything off .. reboot and add items
back until I observe the "RAM drop-off" effect to attempt
to isolate/identify the culprit ..

Would this be a 'prudent' course of action ???

Also any other Windows ME users .. pls check your
SYSTEM INFORMATION to confirm that your 'total physical
memory' is equal to your 'available physical memory'
