Powell and Bush decided to leave the Republican Guard in more than one piece and got nothing from Sadam.
Except to abandon our allies in the regions that could have easily made a difference in the Iraqi history. Like filling the gap when they took his sorry ass down.
But the miserable excuse for a surrender allowed him have air support for his troops who eliminated the Shiites in the south and also to obliterate some of the greatest ecological areas of the entire mideast. BAD decisions by Powell and Bush.
Allowing air transport and helicopter gunships in the north to destroy the other possible insurgents, the Kurds, was also a major gaff in the "surrender". What other war has one ever decisively won and not DEMANDED the LOSING general/president appear to PERSONALLY sign the surrender documents? Incredibly that's what they did and Bush left Schwartzcoff holding the bag....and then Powell got to hold the bag for the first 9 months of Son of George's administration.
The only good thing is that Powell does perform well as a diplomat....surely not as a general.
However there is no doubt that what he is also saying is that Israel and the US backers of Israel were allowed to push the administration into NOT demanding that Israel stop the settlements on the West Bank.
These turn out to be mostly ex US pat born again Zionists, who are zealots and have an incredible wild west attitude of conquering the great frontier....only problem is that frontier is Palestine. Those people have to be reigned in and stopped. And the Palesinians must be able to have a decent place to work and live and support their children. They have nothing at this point and ever since Sharon chose his spot at the temple/mosque to get the antagonism started again a year ago it's been disasterous.
I will say that if the Sudan intelligence article is correct and we didn't get that information it was a terrible mistake.
