Admittedly it is a terrible thing -- a horrendous thing, an awful thing that 5,000-10,000 people were killed by 19 suicidal terrorists on September 11, 2001. We, as a nation, were awakened to this monstrous threat and clearly we must take actions to stop terrorism against Americans no matter where it happens.
But can we let 19 suicidal terrorists vanquish the personal freedoms that are what makes America the greatest nation in the world -- personal freedoms that millions of citizens have fought and died for in a dozen wars to protect the American way of life. Freedoms that if lost world make America a police state with our citizens suffering the loss of privacy, individuality and freedom of movement, freedom of choice, freedom from excessive search and seizure in a far more pervasive way than any totalitarian dictatorship or communist state, the world has ever known.
This is exactly the choice ahead as our government in its Pearl Harbor like mobilization against terrorist attack seeks to achieve the unachievable, in a free and open democracy, total security. Remember that even with our multi-billion dollar airport security infrastructure, the USA was powerless to prevent this incident. Now we will lose the right to eat with plastic utensils and we will be subjects to a total body search at the whim of any $6/hr. security person of little training. We will endure even longer and worse airline service and 2-3 hour check-in times, bomb, drug and money sniffing dogs, X-Ray, hand searches of all bags and goodness knows what other indignities will become the norm, all in the name of TOTAL SECURITY, which is impossible against a determined foe.
All new security initiated to date including the placement of an "armed" sky marshal on all flights would not have changed the incident that happened on Tuesday, and would require thousands of newly trained police professionals at a cost of hundreds of millions of dollars. Yet, even this would be ineffective against a team of suicide hijackers, as was the situation on September 11.
America has enjoyed 10 years of freedom from its last airline hijacking. Why? Because there is little reason or benefit to hijack an American plane. There is no place today that welcomes a hijacker, not even Cuba.
TOTAL SECURITY is a dangerous myth!!!
By further and further disarming our public, all you can guarantee is that only criminals will have weapons and events such as the 9-11 day of infamy can be repeated. The best way to eliminate the risk of suicidal hijacking is to deny access to the aircraft cockpit -- this will stop any further use of airplanes as missiles, and make flying safe again -- No need to turn American airports into armed camps. No need to deny Americans their basic freedoms. No need to make air travel a stress filled, miserable inhuman experience.
America can not afford the siege mentality which is being brewed up by the same bureaucratic masterminds that allowed us to get into the terrible mess which is driving our country to a WWIII footing. CNN news now reports that the airline industry alone is losing $300 million a day due to this disaster and the toll on the US and world economy will be at least ten times that number. Vice President Cheney was quoted in the media as saying that this incident could well drive the US economy into a depression and isn't that exactly what our foes want to see. Let's Say NO to the end of personal freedom and liberty, especially when it only buys us the illusion of security!
America at war!!! But against whom?
* In response to the horrific 9/11 incident, America is gearing up as if it were WWIII: Billions of dollars in emergency funds approved by Congress, participation of NATO, full scale military deployment which is now under way, but AGAINST WHOM!
* We already waste $2-3 billion per year in window dressing airport security. That clearly is worthless against any serious terrorist threat. This week the Congress voted to provide $40 billion to hunt for culprits, not even counting the military preparation which could total $200 to $300 billion or more by the end of the game.
* All the high-tech solutions include ABM missiles defense systems, X-Rays, metal detectors are worthless against suicidal terrorists who are willing to give their lives to bring down America. Banning pocket knives and plastic utensils and anything else with a point, guarantees only that the lawful passengers will be totally helpless against
terrorists who do not intend to follow the rules. Forget the high-tech detection systems against bullets and bombs, low tech ceramic, polycarbonate plastic knives are almost invisible on X-Ray and won't trigger metal detectors.
* By media estimates, Bin Laden has 200-500 fellows -- Even if we assume 1,000 hard-core terrorists, this means the USA is willing to spend more than $200 million per terrorist. This is insane!
* OJ-frenzied paranoid media fears are driving an all out, WAR ON AMERICA HYSTERIA. America is a giant, Bin Laden is a flea -- Americans at war posture -- shutting down all airline transports, all financial markets, etc. is costing America and the world, hundreds of billions in lost productivity. This is a flea bite on the big toe of America --
Let's not respond by amputating our right leg at the hip in response.
There are simple & effective low-tech solutions that can end air terrorism now!
1) Deny terrorists' access to the cockpit by putting a barrier bullet and batter proof door on the airplanes.
2) Take one of the restrooms in front of the plane, switch around the entrance for only the pilots.
3) Give each stewardess an electronic panic button (on their wrist) and place three closed circuit cameras in the passenger cabins, so the pilot can see what's going on and decide if it's a genuine threat.
If yes, the first thing he can do is dive the plane from 35,000 feet/6 miles high in a power dive. In that case, everyone standing up is going be holding onto the ceiling for dear life immobilized. The pilot can keep the plane an erratic fish-rail dive, then climb, then dive orientation until ready to land, thus making purposeful movement of any one in the cabin impossible.
4) In the U.S. there is no place more than 20 minutes away from emergency landing. What is needed is to keep the terrorists from access to the cockpit for just 20 minutes.
5) Issue each pilot and co-pilot a gun, so if necessary, they can fire through the gun-ports in the barrier door.
6) Wanted dead or alive bounties of $25 million per terrorist, plus a green card, new identities for successful antiterrorist bounty hunters and their families will guarantee that within a week, there will be heads of terrorists on poles in front of American Embassies.
Summary:
Low tech solutions are:
* Barrier door that denies access to flight deck (cockpit)
* Private bathroom for pilot only
* Electronic wrist worn panic buttons for stewardesses
* Reward on each terrorist head ($25 million). Within a week, there will be heads on poles in front of American Embassies
* Reward with citizenship and legal sanctuary in the U.S. anti-terrorist bounty hunters
High-Tech Solutions:
* Place gun safes in cockpit to arm pilot in event of hijacking -- safe can only be opened by the captain and will trigger the automatic alarm to FAA via radio and TV transmission. Guns can be used to fire thru gun portal in barrier door.
* Knockout Gas -- Effective almost immediately anesthetic gas exists that would render all people in the cabin disoriented or unconscious in seconds. The gas can be discharged through gas ports in the barrier door or through the cabin via the existing ventilation system if deemed necessary by the captain.
Bottom Line:
Despite the tragic loss of American lives, allowing a small band of terrorists to rob us of our freedom and security by turning this criminal event into an international war is disastrous for both the business of America and the soul of America. The constitutional rights to personal freedoms are what make America great and are so valuable that millions of Americans have paid in blood to defend them!

It is unlikely that American military will achieve what the Soviet Union's war machine was unable to accomplish even after years of protracted and bloody battles of the Afghan-Russian war.
But America has a secret weapon of immense influence which has never failed us, and is the irresistible force which has proven time and time again to be a world-beater in keeping America the #1 superpower without peer on the planet today. This unstoppable weapon can win the peace without bloodshed and without destruction.
Winning the war against terrorists will only come by undercutting their support at the grass roots, with its young followers who have never known any worldview other than that of radical fundamentalist Islamic dogma.
Just one cruise missile could buy 5,000 portable walkman size personal dish TV systems, imagine the effect on the hearts and minds of young Afghanistan rebels, if instead of the Koran and radical war mongering terrorists for instructors they had other options.
A different voice, a voice of reason, of education, of entertainment, and of world opinion broadcast to them in their native tongue. Imagine the effect if we gave free personal dish TVs to tens of thousands of young Afghanistan, high quality television turned to 24/7 programming of Islamic tolerance, American freedom, MTV, rock music, cartoons, home-shopping shopping channels, the whole of addictive capitalist consumerism preaching Hollywood Madonna, Michael Jackson, Britney Spears, star studded blockbuster, can't put it down, entertainment programming such as the Moslem world has never seen before, broadcast into their part of the world, all with one message ... down with hate and fundamental intolerance of others. Up with love of life, materialism, fun stuff, freedom and long life for all.
It may seem strange, but think how effectively TV has changed the world and made America the undisputed #1 opinion leader in all things ... all thanks to TV and mostly by accident. It is precisely this clash of the modern free world with Moslem old world secular views that leads them to ban satellite TVs, American magazines, books and newspapers in their own homelands.
Hollywood produces the most mind altering seductive substance in history. It is this idea and info power that we wield in abundance. This is a power which can be focused to the doom of terrorism and its adherents.
We can win this war, but it will not be won by force of the gun, this is a war of civilizations, of philosophy, of intolerance vs. democracy, and it is a war we must fight for the minds of our enemies, for if we cannot convert or kill them all, then this is a war that will not be won.
