By coincidence I was thinking about this line over the weekend, but also about the response I read in a book some years ago (I don't recall which). What does it gain a man to trade his soul for the world? It gains him the world... Although you seem to be looking at it from the other angle? The interpretation above is somewhat more selfish... but still true.
