Wal-Mart Sales 'On Plan' Last Week

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (NYSE:WMT - news), the world's largest retailer, on Monday said its sales at stores open at least a year were ``on plan'' for the third week of September.

Average ticket totals were lower, but customer numbers were stronger than a year ago at both its Wal-Mart and Sam's Club stores, the company said.

The Bentonville, Arkansas-based company record strong sales of food, housewares, pet supplies, shoes and women's wear. The company said its same-store sales are within its original guidance for September of an increase of 4 to 6 percent.

On Sept. 17, Wal-Mart said the Sept. 11 attacks had hurt its sales.

The company's shares closed at $49.50 on Friday on the New York Stock Exchange (news - web sites).
