Bombardier Receives a $197 Million Order for High-Speed Power Heads in Spain
MONTREAL, QUEBEC--OCTOBER 1, 2001 - 10:12 EDT Bombardier Transportation confirms that it has received, together with consortium partner Patentes Talgo, an order for the delivery of 16 HST 350 high-speed trainsets to the Spanish National Railways RENFE. The new trains will be used on Spain's high-speed line which runs between Madrid, Barcelona and the French border town of Le Perthus. Bombardier will be responsible for the manufacture of the 32 power heads. The total contract is valued at approximately $491 million Cdn (338 million euros) and Bombardier Transportation's share of the contract is approximately Cdn$197 million (136 million euros). Deliveries are scheduled to take place between March 2004 and December 2004.
Bombardier Transportation will develop and manufacture the lightweight, four-axle high-speed power heads, including the entire electrical equipment, the propulsion system, and the bogies. Bombardier will also be involved in the final assembly and testing of the trainsets. The production will be undertaken at Bombardier's plants in Kassel, Mannheim and Siegen (Germany), as well as Trápaga (Spain). Final assembly of the trainsets will be undertaken in Talgo's plant in Las Matas (Spain).
"This order is a demonstration of the confidence that our customers have in Bombardier's competence and know-how in the high-speed sector," said Wolfgang Tolsner, President Locomotives and Freight.
A prototype of the HST 350 power head has been successfully undergoing testing in Spain for over a year now, providing ample proof of its high level of availability and dependability. Its record run at just under 360 km/h took place during the spring of this year.
