We could probably replace the word 'fundamentalist' with the word 'fanatic' and remove ourselves from the racial/ethnic/religious overtones. I do not want Christianity associated with the IRA or the Serbians anymore than devout Arabs want to be associated with bin Laden.

But 'fanatic' fits more than just zeolotry from religious fringe groups -> Fascism and Communism also brought about 'justification' for untold slaughter.

Fanatacism can be leftist, rightist, religious or just plain out there. The bad part is that you cannot reason with fanatics. Witness the 'morality' of an Abortion foe killing a doctor or a patient at a clinic in the name of life. Moral consistency is irrelevant once you have drunk the koolaid.

We need to distance ourselves from terminology like 'Muslim' and call these people what they are - Fanatics. After WW2 we were careful to differentiate Germans from Nazi's and the Japanese people from their Military. This permitted reconciliation and face saving (even though many Germans and Japanese had supported their War efforts).
