too many lengthy articles in lieu of substantive personal interaction and discourse.

I too am thinking about this exact problem. Each day the avalanche seems to be accelerating. the reality is that there is an inexhaustible supply of resource material and that we certainly cannot digest this material beyond a certain point.

I'm at a bit of loss as to how to regulate this situation -- you folks need to help me out here.

Several ideas have come to mind:

1. Limit copyposting (nice term...) to one or two items per person per day.

2. Devise a scaling system that permit several news items per day on the board, but far fewer magazine, journal, and website postings each day.

3. Use me at some level to pre-filter all this background info. The good news is that I would closely guide the forum. The bad news is that I would closely guide the forum! The even worst news is that I might be buried in material.

4. Move back to my original focus on Foreign Affairs articles supplemented by news items and a limited amount of (preapproved) background material from other sources. This would lead to a more "acedemic" and limited forum - actually closer to my original intent.

5. We could require that every item be accompanied with a poster-created summary and/or analysis suggesting why this item is important, what it means and to who, what effect this may have on future policy decisions for the USA and other nations. LOL This would sure slow things down! But you know, I kind of like it.

6. Limit discussion to specific topics - the "assigned" readings in the header, other suggested readings, and current new items. This would focus the forum quite a bit.

Everyone interested in this forum should sound off with suggestions on how to make it a more effective and interesting place to spend your time with the emphasis on 'effective'. Item 4 above may help guide your thoughts.

Please bear in mind -- this thread is NOT a world events and history FREE-FOR-ALL. It becomes a waste of time if we do that.
