I just discovered today as well. As I understand it, some crap Canadian broker-dealers petitioned to have Canadian accounts in foreign brokerages closed because their business was hurting for it. Which, I might add, is only because their businesses are slower, crappier, more expensive, and more difficult to use.

I'm very damn angry about this, and I certainly hope that not all the American brokers are going to get the same call. I will sooner move to the United States or Bermuda than use a Canadian brokerage.
