I do think my friend was referring to the practical and not the epistemological problems you mention. It's not a problem of knowing when we're pure but of knowing that, being the sort of things we are, our motives never can be pure.

An ill-considered thought: could these two problems be sides of the same coin? Because we know ourselves too well we doubt our motives too much and therefore wouldn't know a case of pure motivation (assuming we even understand what the hell that means) if it ran over us with with a large but well--maintained truck.
