Freightliner LLC A DaimlerChrysler Company
September 27, 2001
To: All Freightliner LLC Non-Represented Employees (Due to existing differences, separate letters required for Canadian, TBB, and Refurb Center employees) From: Rainer Schmueckle Subject: Turnaround Plan – Compensation Component
Over the past several months, there has been an extensive amount of effort expended in developing a comprehensive Turnaround Program for Freightliner LLC. Essentially every facet of the Company’s business has been examined. As a result, numerous changes have been identified for implementation that range greatly in scope and complexity. However, in all cases, these changes are considered absolutely essential to the viability of the Company. Further details of the Turnaround Plan will be communicated by mid-October.
Regrettably, total compensation programs must be adjusted in order to reduce costs. Discussions regarding this subject will be required with Union leaders at represented locations. For non-represented employees, the specific changes outlined below will become effective on January 6, 2002. These changes will apply to all exempt, non-exempt office, manufacturing plant, PDC, PDI, and refurb center employees.
Salary / Wage and Benefit Changes – Effective January 6, 2002
1. Individual salaries and wages will be reduced by 5%.
2. A monthly charge will be required for health and welfare coverage. Rates, regardless of plan selection, will be: individual - $40.00 per month, employee plus one dependent - $90.00 per month, and employee with two or more dependents - $130.00 per month.
3. The prescription drug co-pay will increase to: $10.00 for generic drugs and $15.00 for brand drugs.
The continuing escalation of health care costs make these benefit plan changes unavoidable
I wanted to give you advance notice because I recognize these changes will necessitate adjustments for employees. However, the alternative of not implementing these and other changes puts the entire Company and all jobs at risk.
I am absolutely convinced that these sacrifices are necessary as we unite to form a strong team committed to the goal of restoring Freightliner LLC to viability and profitability. I am counting on your understanding and acceptance of these very difficult but nevertheless imperative decisions.
Thank you and best regards.
Rainer Schmueckle President and Chief Executive Officer
