I'm tired. I will save what you wrote and read it carefully later..

One last gasp:

The constitution guarantees the right of free speech and free association without fear of government persecution.
HUAC did it's best to force people to explain their beliefs, affiliations and associations when they had no constitutional right to do so and persecution resulted as some brave souls decided that it was in their interest to explain what they, or even worse, their buddies had been up to over the years. all of this was hardly American and decidedly unconstitutional.

FDR -- a great hero. Unlike what we think of McCarthy. But you're dead right, to our everlasting shame his government and its people did what it did to Japanese Americans. That bit of history is relevant now and we are talking about it, which is encouraging.

Still in all, FDR has a much greater legacy, despite his mistakes, than Mr. McCarthy (FDR you'll remember, with all of his social programs was the anti-business commie that neverthless saved our ass). Though I would argue that both ought to be forgiven for their respective trespasses to the extent that we have indeed learned from their mistakes.

I won't argue about which was the greater mistake. I'm not sure how to measure it.
