SANTA CLARA, Calif. and BOTHELL, Wash.--(BW HealthWire)--Oct. 1, 2001--Symyx Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: SMMX - news) and Prolinx®, Inc. today announced that they have entered into a non-exclusive license agreement under which Prolinx intends to commercialize products incorporating a proprietary polymer developed by Symyx. The Symyx polymer provides a protein-friendly, high-contrast/low-background support for protein capture and expression analysis. Prolinx intends to launch substrates and protein arrays using the Symyx material before the end of the year. Symyx anticipates receiving royalties from the sale of these products in early 2002. Under the terms of the agreement, Prolinx has non-exclusive access to the Symyx polymer to be used in combination with the Prolinx Versalinx(TM) Chemical Affinity Tools surface chemistry technology for use in its proteomics product pipeline. The Versalinx affinity chemistry employs proprietary synthetic, non-biological, small molecules that enable facile immobilization and detection of biomolecules. Versalinx Chemistry affords specific and high capacity binding with low background, and is compatible with high throughput, automated and miniaturized methods. By incorporating the three-dimensional structure of the Symyx polymer, Versalinx advantages are augmented for some protein immobilization methods. Prolinx will initially commercialize these technologies in substrates for protein capture, and will later expand to include custom and catalog protein arrays. ``This alliance came together quickly, and the strong combination of the Prolinx chemistry with our polymer should enable a rollout this year, making this the first commercial product to incorporate one of our materials,'' said Steve Goldby, chairman and chief executive officer of Symyx Technologies. ``We are very pleased to work with Prolinx as our initial partner in proteomics, and anticipate working with other companies as well to commercialize our materials in a broad range of products in this fast moving field.'' ``Symyx' polymer technology offers unique properties that, when combined with our Versalinx chemistry, allow us to offer unique, enabling products that overcome analytical obstacles faced by the emerging, high growth proteomics market,'' said Jim Mahoney, president and chief executive officer of Prolinx. Prolinx, founded in 1995, is a privately held biotechnology company located north of Seattle, Washington, USA. The company develops, manufactures, and markets tools, applications, and systems that advance developments in bioresearch, biotechnology and drug discovery. The company is commercializing a number of proprietary technologies including Versalinx(TM) Chemical Affinity Tools, a synthetic surface chemistry targeted at proteomics and genomics markets. The company is also developing instruments for label-free molecular interaction analysis based upon advances in surface plasmon resonance technology. The first instrument, the Octave(TM) Molecular Interaction Analysis System will be released in early 2002.
