I had a good stone mason when I built my house a couple of years ago. Guy had apprenticed in Washington DC working on many of the buildings and walls in the area. About 5'5" tall and 5'5" wide. In his early 60's and rugged as all get out. I got a helluva deal on the fireplace for $6,500. All granite from Rhode Island, Vermont and somewhere in Canada. A real crafstman. Only problem is, he just loved to tell ya stories, so if you got into a conversation with him expect to lose an hour. He cut every single stone by hand and worked completely by himself. Said he cant get young kids to help him anymore...no one wants to learn the trade...too bad, someday it will be a lost art.
