Art, for a different perspective, I have a CoolPix 800 (2.1MP), I always take shots on the 'fine' setting (highest other than uncompressed TIFF), and don't necessarily agree with you on memory amounts (your needs sound 'high' to me, if it's a casual user we're talking about).

Most of the time my 48 mb card is more than enough, but I usually carry one or more of my other cards (24, 16x2, 8) as backups. On vacations I take them all (112 mb total), and they have done the job just fine, though I'd agree they wouldn't be enough for a longer trip (say 2 weeks).

However, given how fast prices are coming down, I'd sure 'average down' and 'diversify' by buying additional capacity bit by bit instead of risking it all on one bigger card.

PS: Part of the reason I believe in 'card diversification' is that one of my first CF cards (a 16 meg purchased in 2000) was a defective SanDisk card - though I haven't had any problems with any others since (including several SanDisk brand ones).
