PoetTrader, All of the competition in this space should be taken very seriously as existing partnerships seem to endure. It is best to break QLGC and its competitors into the basic technology...here is an initial attempt...

Legacy SCSI/ FC controller chips( I'm not strong on this portion of the technology)

QLGC
LSI
Agilent
others?

FC HBA-There was that recent review

QLGC
EMLX
JNIC
ADPT
Atto

I think it is Montague who says watch the ones who design their own ASICs, and hence have control of the technology.
That would leave us with ...

QLGC
EMLX
JNIC

You saw that JNIC does't do windows yet. JNIC is an S-bus SUNW expert with very high prices. We hope that QLGC eats their lunch, when SUNW FINALLY sells all of their own Sbus HBA that they have on the shelf.

FC switches...

BRCD
INRG
QLGC
MCDT
VIXL
ZOOX

Much time is spent in this arena. Everyone knows BRCD and how it has the lions share of the market so far.

MCDT is interesting because of their ties to EMC

INRG is a QLGC partner and they make BIG director switches.

It is news season for next gen. technology now so lets see what they have to offer. Many companies have metnioned the phrase "muti-protocol" fabric switches. I want to see what they really mean by this.

Future technologies...

Infiniband..
INTC
QLGC
lots of private companies
Banderacom(Q owns a few shares of this one)
Infiniswitch
all of the names listed above

iSCSI/IP ideas
QLGC
CSCO's Andaimo
Nishan
other private companies
all the names above
EMLX's giganet

Poettrader, The pr piece I dream of reading some day would go like this...

Our, ------ company has the prospect of keeping up on too many protocols and cannot find that expertise for each of them to sustain us and insure that we have the right mix of technologies when we need them. We will outsource all of our i/o, interconnect technology to the company that has them all under one roof with one set of APIs so that we can plug them in where we need them, when we need them and not worry about going down some evolutionary dead end street.

No one has said anything close to this yet, they must think they can still do it themselves?
