Hi all; It's official: Sun to use DDR, the "mainstream, commodity" memory. Sorry Rambus, LOL!!!
Sun Challenges IBM, Intel Steven Fyffe, Electronic News, October 1, 2001 Sun Microsystems Inc. executives dismissed competitive threats and shrugged off the current economic turmoil to launch the Palo Alto, Calif.-based company's high-end Sun Fire 15K Unix server in New York last week.
The Sun Fire is powered by 106 UltraSPARC III processors—Sun's flagship processor—running at 900MHz. When all 106 CPUs are running, the server can hit 6,000 mainframe MIPS. It has half a terrabyte of memory and 4 pedabytes (or 4 quadrillion bytes) of storage in each cabinet. ... Sun's memory strategy is to go along the DDR path, Kunz [director of marketing and business development for Sun's processor product group] said.
"We will stick to mainstream, commodity memory," she said. e-insite.net
BWAHAHAHAHA!!!
LOL!!!
Those of you with long memories probably remember the MAJC, the RDRAM compatible chip that Sun and Rambus couldn't talk enough about two years ago. Where is it now? Here's a reminder: content.techweb.com
The MAJC chip is so late now that it appears to be dead. Here's my note from May of 2000:
Bilow, May 22, 2000 "... Now its the second quarter of 2000. We should be seeing those engineering samples any time now. ..." #reply-13748951
jim kelley, July 31, 2000 "Sunw's MAJC graphics processor uses Rambus. It is just getting started so we will have to wait to see its significance. Nintendo also use RDRAM albeit the older generation. I would expect to see RDRAM based graphics systems utilizing the new generations of QRSL RDRAM in PC add on cards. #reply-14140884
