1. 56 years after Hiroshima and Nagasaki, we still debate whether they were extreme and barbaric. It has prevented their reoccurrence, by rational human beings, so far (no future guarantee intended). I don't know what our defensive response would be. Suffice it to say that for decades we could have, but have not, radioactively obliterated at will any individual country or combination of countries in the entire Middle East, or destroyed the entire World at the bark of a command, if that were our will.

2. I'm no psychologist, but it seems bin Laden is an amoral egomaniac with only his own power and interests at heart, but able to recruit support by identifying with the downtrodden and promising a brighter future (often with virgins not in this world, but in the afterlife). A combination of Hitler, Jim Jones, and Charles Manson?
