Sun and PCCW to finance 3D Web project

September 28, 2001 12:44am

PCCW Business eSolutions has joined the City University of Hong Kong and Sun Microsystems in a research project to develop Web-based 3D collaboration tools.

The research project aims to allow Hong Kong-based companies to collaborate with their mainland or overseas colleagues on manufacturing projects in a range of industries.

Designers could use the system to adjust digital models to a customer's requirements or transmit the adjustments to the factory floor.

City University has received HK$2 million from PCCW and HK$1.9 million from the government-backed Innovation and Technology Fund (ITF) to develop the technology.

Sun will provide HK$1.2 million worth of workgroup servers and graphic workstations for use in the project.

We are developing Web-based 3D collaborative engines which will cut the transmission time of loading and modifying objects, said project principal investigator Rynson Lau.

It enables collaboration on designs by people at different locations.

Mr Lau said many industries would benefit from this technology.

For example, textile designers and overseas contract manufacturers can work together online and make changes to the designs at a much quicker speed, he said.

In a collaborative environment, modification on the textile's 3D designs can be made in real time.

With the newly developed engine, users will be able to view specific portions of a 3D object in a multi-resolution model.

Data also can be transmitted to the user with a walkthrough technique under a collaborative environment.

We saw a strong demand for such technology in the market, said Danny Kilis, senior vice-president of PCCW eProduct Development and Services.

"Such kinds of technology are useful for many industries like garment, manufacturing products and all types of design.

In terms of long-term direction, we hope such e-commerce applications can facilitate our [business-to-business] development and enhance productivity.

Under the ITF terms, PCCW will own the copyright to the research results. Target customers mainly will be medium-sized enterprises.

We are planning to bring the technology to the mainland as well. Market plans on Greater China will be announced by the end of this year, said Mr Kilis.
