In the early years I think Mormons had multiple wives for the same reasons. Life was hard on the frontier, and the Mormons were persecuted as well. So what better way to build up you population base. BTW mainstream Mormons no longer condone multiple marriages and haven't for quite awhile. I think it was factor in Utah becoming a State. They had to drop it which they did.
