I think her statement was in very bad taste.

But I think it was well-meaning.

I think Updike's was also in very bad taste.

Probably also well-meaning.

But some failures of sensibility are so great as to amount to insults to the dead and to the bereaved.

Not intentional ones, though. Of that, I'm sure.

I have expressed my sincere emotional reaction to what I see as the tasteless trivialization of death by Oprah and Updike. You have dissed me for that.

You seem, after all, to think there is a "right way," and that it is Oprah's, and not mine, and to feel free to "dis" me on that account.

So let's just allow each other to express our thoughts, emotions and opinions, okay? Oprah isn't here, Updike isn't here. You and I are, though.
