[CSCO/ALA views]

can't fault CSCO for their choice; it looks like a good win-win alliance that can execute globally.

on the plus side:

* ALA got the deal, not AWRE; (small) royalties likely will accrue to AMTX

* COMS and ASND might re-evaluate their DMT alliances

* CSCO validates ADSL; BAY, FORE, et al. need to get going

on the minus:

* ALA got the deal, not AMTX. (so much for the Gibbons connection.)

* i don't think this is a provisional ADSL deal for CSCO pending AMTX's chips being ready. there's no evidence that Mietec's chipset is in any way technically inferior to the CG ot C6X offerings, or more expensive. a cross-license deal with AMTX will make Mietec standards-compliant. once CSCO starts putting R&D into building stuff around the Mietec chips it's game over.

* even if CSCO does do projects with AMTX, they'll be niche deals. the ALA alliance will generate the big numbers (and Hayes will get the CPE part of the deal).
