The aircraft, flight No. CD 7444, on its way to Delhi, was hijacked after passing Ahmedabad, initial reports said. The plane, with 46 passengers and 6 crew on board, departed from Mumbai at 11:15 pm.

The Star News said all the passengers were unharmed but that they remained aboard the jet, which was parked at an isolated area at Indira Gandhi International Airport. The plane was surrounded by police and commandos.

There was no word on the number of hijackers.

The TV station reported that authorities opened a communications link with the hijackers.
