Ever so slightly related to the topic at hand, here's a serious question for the group of intelligent, market-savvy, incredibly good-looking investment gods and godesses that are paying attention here:

Is there any business or technical reason why a short sale cannot be indicated as such as it happens?

Is there any reason why total short interest in a stock cannot be reported or calculated real-time, or close to it, like market cap or P/E, instead of once a month with a 2 week delay, or whatever it is now?

(I'm talking about real, exchange-listed or NAZ stuff here, not non-reporting OTC-BB trash with ever-expanding floats, fishy Reg D deals and all that murky business.)
