[Buschman] is proposing to surrender some of that sovereignty in exchange for human rights and the rule of law. That is not a betrayals of one's country. That is holding your country to a higher standard.

The parallel I tried to draw is the formation of our Republic. The people of the former colony of Virginia, for example, likely considered Virginia a sovereign state and allowing people from Massachusetts to make laws that would apply to Virginia probably didn't sit well with everyone there. Only when they were convinced that their rights and interests would be protected, only when they were satisfied that the Constitution (a document they had a hand in creating) was sound and fair, did they agree to join the Union and be bound by its Constitution. That is not the same thing as "surrendering" sovereignty, IMO, though some at the time probably argued it was (as did others in seceding from the Union when foreign interlopers tried to tell them slavery had to end). It does, however, rise above the level of alliance or treaty.
