I'm not one of those kind of cyclists. I ride my mountain bike up back roads, preferably dirt ones. The pavement is between me and my destination. I know a lot of pinheads cycle. There are roads that I won't cycle on because they just aren't designed for it - I found myself on your side in an argument with one of the street bike riders who felt there was an absolute right to be on the pavement.

You want to know my pet peeve? Horses. They won't let me mountain bike in places where horses get to go. The horses eat the plants, pound the cr@p out of the trail and leave piles of dung everywhere. You can't see any evidence of my passing on a bike but a 1000+ lbs of horse pounding on heavy adobe soil will leave marks that last for years. You calculate the PSI from a air filled tire rolling and the PSI for a steel shod ungulate -- no comparison. Plus they let cattle graze the sh!t out of the place. Oh, but don't let cyclists go down the single track - they might hurt the environment. BS I say.

IMO, it is patriotic to cycle. It makes you healthy and you aren't burning fuel. Double good. Cities should be laid out to encourage cyclists. Hell, if I could cycle to work, I would. But, guess what? Developers don't give a rat's @ss about bicycle lanes and city planners don't make 'em.

Thanks for the opening! I needed to counter vent. Now back to good intentions of people paving the road to Hell...
