Virgin, Sprint Mum On Deal Rumors
By Kristy Bassuener
October 3, 2001

Officials at Sprint PCS and Virgin Mobile USA won't comment on rumors that the two have finally arrived at a mobile virtual network deal.

However, a Wireless Week source says the two have sealed a deal that would enable Virgin Mobile USA to market and sell Virgin-branded service in the United States using Sprint PCS' nationwide wireless network.

Sprint PCS spokesman Dan Wilinsky would not comment on whether or not the MVNO discussions had resulted in a contract.

''I can't comment on anything at the moment,'' echoed John Tantum, CEO of Virgin Mobile USA.

Sprint PCS and Virgin Mobile USA confirmed in June that a possible MVNO deal was under discussion. This summer, speculation was that the two planned a joint venture that would cost roughly $1 billion to finance. Similarly, Virgin Mobile in the U.K. is a 50-50 joint venture between Virgin Group -- a privately held empire run by British billionaire Sir Richard Branson -- and Deutsche Telekom's One 2 One.

Virgin Mobile launched in November of 1999, targeting U.K. customers in the teen and under-25 market with great success. Last month, the firm confirmed in a news release it had more than 1 million wireless subscribers. However, some industry watchers are skeptical whether American teens will have the same loyalty to the Virgin brand name.
