Raid on Jewish Settlement in Gaza, 3 dead, 5 Wounded, Others Taken Hostages

Tuesday, October 02 2001 @ 04:45 PM GMT

Palestinian fighters have raided a Jewish settlement in the Gaza Strip, killing at least 3 settlers and wounding several others.

Continued shooting is reported in the Alei Sinai settlement, located on the northern tip of Gaza, near the Israeli border. Israeli army helicopters are flying over the settlement and more troops have been sent to the area.

The shootings come hours after President Bush said that the creation of a Palestinian state has always been part of the U.S. vision for the Middle East.

Mr. Bush told reporters Tuesday that it is vital to reduce violence in the region first and follow proposals by the international Mitchell Commission designed to lead to Israeli-Palestinian peace negotiations.

Palestinians welcomed Mr. Bush's statement, saying that a Palestinian state with Jerusalem as the capital would bring security, peace and stability to the Middle East.

An adviser to Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon says that Israel's top priority right now is to end a year of violence.

A cease-fire agreed to by both sides last week has looked increasingly shaky. At least 18 Palestinians have been killed since the truce was announced last Wednesday.

Meanwhile, the president refused to confirm news reports Tuesday that his administration had been preparing a major Middle East peace initiative that was derailed by the September 11 terrorist attacks in New York and Washington. The reports said Secretary of State Colin Powell had planned to announce the U.S. initiative in a speech at a U.N. General Assembly session.

President Bush said today that his administration is working with both sides to encourage a reduction in violence so that meaningful discussions can take place. Secretary Powell spoke with Mr. Arafat and the Israeli defense minister early Tuesday to discuss ways to strengthen a truce and reduce tensions.

In the West Bank, Israeli soldiers fired rubber-coated bullets and tear gas to disperse hundreds of Palestinians who were protesting an Israeli roadblock near Bir Zeit university. At least eight Palestinians were slightly injured while 20 others were treated for gas inhalation.
