it seems that what is happening is that some carriers, like Cingular and Nextel, who do not have existing IS95 infrastructure, are deciding there are no existing killer apps for high speed data and that it would be more cost-effective for them to just upgrade their existing network to try to get more voice capacity, which they know will be in demand. ultimately, I think this will go to the question we've been debating -- are there any real 1x killer apps that will emerge (quickly) once 1x is implemented by Sprint and Verizon? if so, we may not have a long-term problem; if not, we're in big trouble. it seems we're at an extremely difficult cross-roads for "long-term" investors -- whether there really is a big enough income stream from 1x, and the timing of it.
