Jobless Claims Hit Nine-Year High, Boosted by Mass Layoffs at Airlines WASHINGTON -- Initial jobless claims surged to a nine-year high last week, boosted by layoffs in the travel and airline industries. The Labor Department attributed the sharp rise to "secondary effects" of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, including the mass layoffs at the nation's airlines. Since the attacks, more than 100,000 layoffs have been announced, consumer confidence has plunged and billions of dollars worth of business has been lost. With new uncertainies raised by the attacks and many economists saying a recession this year is unavoidable, businesses will be reluctant to hire new workers in the months ahead, analysts say.
