Techie,

Do you have any idea what effect of the following news will be on ADSL?

WASHINGTON (Reuter) - Cable television companies will offer
nearly all U.S. elementary and secondary schools free high-speed
equipment for linking to the Internet, the Washington Post reported
in Tuesday editions.

The newspaper quoted industry officials as saying the companies,
which include Tele-Communications Inc., and Time Warner Inc.,
would offer the schools so-called cable modems, which provide
much faster access to the Internet than conventional modems that
rely on telephone wires.

Cable executives told the paper the project, to be announced at a
news conference Tuesday, would cost their industry hundreds of
millions of dollars.

Analysts said the companies were hoping teachers and students
would use the same company to reach the Internet at home.
