Turkey is arguably the most advanced on separation of church and state, but they've had more time, since Ataturk in the 20's to modernize. Ataturk also wielded a heavy hand, making arab writing illegal, for example. Even after a generation or two under the modern republic, there remains dissension, and it has been growing.

Oh, I believe the Dutch government also allows churches to tax members, or at least it did when I lived there in the early 80s. Might be why most churches were empty -g-
