I like to remind people that the 1930's were pretty harsh for workers. FDR usurped many of the issues of the Reds (which, IMO, were legitimate). People seem to forget that our greatgrandfathers were bashed on the head by Pinkertons so we could have a 40 hour work week. How soon people forget. FDR's taking of the "progressive" platform prevented communism from getting a wider spread footing in the U.S. I for one am glad for many of the things that were put in place for people that weren't the beneficiaries of private social welfare programs. These were selective, racist and frequently had a religious ideology behind them.
