John,
Crossing the perception to reality is what is needed. I don’t question the real quality of AMD, just the perception in the general market.
Flippy flops or gigga wack advantage is not going to expand processors sells beyond the existing market. What will is the “warm fuzzy”! When you buy a car do you care if a Kia has more horsepower, a V6, or that it also comes with a CD compared to a Toyota. It might have a better warranty also, but that little voice in your head says….Toyota = quality. Maybe the Kia is better (maybe not), price will gain a certain market share but the rest will come from crossing the perception barrier.
I’m not calling the K7 a Kia, just trying to illustrate a point. Not everyone responds to data and bar charts…..they like the “warm fuzzy”. This is where AMD is lacking and it doesn’t help when major OEMS drop them. You may get a techno savvy person to agree to AMD quality given enough data but not the rest of the world.
Think about this. First assume the K7 is a better chip and is more reliable. Looking at the car industry during the 70’s and 80’s, how long did it take a superior Japanese car to change perception that they are better than American made, also how long did it take American car makers to take back market share. Next given this…..what was limiting…the better car to the market or time to change perception? Advance to chips…. consider the leapfrog of the Athlon over the P3 and the faster pace of the techno industry. Will perception change faster due to shorter product cycle times or is it a constant.
I think Intel will play the performance comparison game as long as AMD will continue to compare products on this factor alone. The real sell to the mass market is the perception of quality not the “bells and whistles”.

Just my opinion…..tonight
