FDR did a decent job of making people feel there was hope in bad times and he did a decent job as a leader of our country during the war. I think both of those things where of benefit to out country. Besides that the only thing I give him much credit for is that he was an effective politician. He could get his program passed through congress and avoid it being rejected by the courts.

We are better off having had him then having had a horrible president or series of presidents during the difficult times when he was president.

But I think a lot of the things he did "accomplish" were negative including greatly increasing the size of the government (not just the military spending for the war, but increases before the war and a permanent increase in the scope of government spending) Also he moved the federal government away from respecting its constitutional limitations.
