"Driving test deters German golfers

GERMAN golfers want to change a law that requires would-be players to qualify for a licence before they can tee off.
Germany is believed to be the only country in the world that makes golfers sit a written test and pay up to £700 in tuition fees to gain the licence...."

"...The test also involves driving, chipping and putting and playing 18 holes in no more than 108 strokes. Only then does a candidate gain the Platzreife — a word derived from the German for “place” and “ripe”, meaning he or she is ripe for a place on a course.

“It is idiotic and it is time it came to an end,” said Christian Schulten, from Stuttgart, who is part of a coalition of clubs, individuals and business people who are seeking to change the 40-year-old law.

Germany’s two biggest golf associations want to keep the system. The Verein Clubloser Golfspieler said: “One cannot have amateurs hacking up the fairways.” ..."
