I think characterizing our situation as Islam vs. Christianity is simply incorrect. Above all we have to recognize that there are 643 versions of every religion. None of them are monolithic. There are Christians who risk their lives for the happiness of others; there are also Christians who murder doctors and nurses doing or helping abortions. Indeed Hitler never denied being a Christian (though I never heard of him entering a church.) There are Jews who claim that Zionism is wrong because the Messiah has not arrived yet. There are also Jews who claim it as a religious duty that the land of Israel must expand to all of the Biblical limits. They also think that to murder in order to enforce laws about their sabbath day of rest is fine. There are Moslems who are shocked at the WTC atrocity and say that the fundamentalists have "hijacked Islam." Here in Toronto, there are somewhat more Moslems than Jews and the papers tell the side of the Moslems who are NOT living in the 7th century A.D. There are also Moslems who think that heaven is non-stop sex with an infinite succession of the most appealing women. Which is the true Christianity? Which is the true Judaism? Which is the true Islam?
It is very important, as Goethe said, to treat people as if they already that which they are capable of becoming. We should not treat people as if they were going to get as bad as some of their coreligionists. I, an atheist am fervently, I mean fervently, against all religions. But on a concrete practical issue in this world, I know I will find allies from any and all religions. Let's not demonize any religion. At least, test the flavour first.
