Spend X Billion to upgrade, then you get 4X the MOU capacity to sell at 1/4 the price per MOU.. Net result.. The Infrastructure Upgrade was not a prudent business decision!

You know it is not as simple as that. This would be the case if all of the operators used the same technology....and each could be convinced not to upgrade (see Prisoner's Dilemma). The problem for Nextel is that the CDMA carriers ARE going to upgrade. The prices ARE going to drop to 1/4 per MOU....the question is if Nextel has the infrastructure to support the increased capacity that will be required when MOU's rise dramatically.

All of this is based on the fact that wireless data never takes off. If it does, Nextel will be screwed.
